Local News: Dartmouth Idol Review
On Friday, March 2nd, in Spaulding Auditorium, the final round of this year’s Dartmouth Idol took place. Dartmouth Idol, for those of you that don’t know, is a singing competition not unlike American Idol. In the finals, there were six competitors. They each had two full performances, and one medley where they all sang, before the winners were chosen. The contestants were Phoebe Bodurtha, Charli Fool-Bear Vetter, Hayley Lynch, Monte Reed, Nick Knesek and Emily Liu.
The whole performance was highly enjoyable, and all of the contestants were very talented, but in the end the winner was Monte Reed, with Emily Liu in second and Phoebe Bodurtha in third. The winners were chosen by vote, by the audience.
Emily’s Thoughts
Although this competition was unique and most people had a great time the voting was mostly relied on the audience not the judges. It was difficult this year because all of the contestants were extremely good singers. They all looked like they were having fun onstage and it was hard not to dance along especially during President Kim’s guest appearance and solo. Not only were the participants competing, they were also honoring Dr. Seuss’ birthday and they gave a tribute to Whitney Houston.
I think that all three people who placed were good, but in my opinion Phoebe Bodurtha definitely should have won. I think that Emily Liu and Monte Reed were good but their voices were not as good as Phoebe’s. I would also enjoy if the judges picked a song for each of the contestants to sing as well as a song they pick. I think the whole production was an enjoyable experience for me. I thought it was so hard to decide who to vote for because they were all good this year and the music was fabulous. I totally recommend going to those of you who are considering going next year.
Zea’s Thoughts
It was a close competition. All of the contestants were talented and could easily have won. The three people who placed were, in my opinion, not the best. Originally, my favorite was Hayley, in part because for her introductory snippet she sang one of my favorite songs, I Want to Hold Your Hand by the Beatles, and she did an extraordinary job. Unfortunately, her first full performance, a medley of Hot Stuff, I Will Survive, and Survivor was not the right thing for her voice. She was nervous for her second performance, I Hope You Dance, although she grew confident as the song went on, and the end of the song was wonderfully done.
In the end, I voted for Nick Knesek and Phoebe Bodurtha, because I thought that overall their performances were the best, but they were all very talented. The winner, Monte Reed, however, I wasn’t so enamored of. He was good, I admit it, but he wasn’t the best, at least in my opinion. Also, for his introductory snippet, he sang Moves Like Jagger, a song I, personally, find obnoxious. That was probably part of it, but most of it was that, by the end, I definitely preferred some of the other contestants. When the results were announced, they were genuinely a surprise to me, because of the extraordinary display of talent from all of the contestants.
